Justice K. Chambers' debut work, Shattered Living, touches on the fragility and darkness of the human state when suffering with mental illness. In this collection of fifty-two poems, she takes the reader on an eye-opening journey of inner turmoil and loss of self, then brings them to a place of acceptance, where they can learn to cope and find their light in the shadows again.

The Possession

I did not know you,
I did not let you in,
You had no right to strip my soul from within

I could not hear you, see you, or give you a touch,
But you took me in haste, I know this much

I tried to fight you, kick and scream;
You still took over,
Rushing into me with your evil scheme

I tried to breathe, but you were choking me
Why can't I see you?
What the hell could this be?

The physical toll excruciating,
Slowly turning into the monster you were creating.
I could not grasp onto you,
Do you have a name?
God help me I am going insane

You took everything I once was and knew
You took a bite and had a good, hard chew.
I slowly figured you out and gave this possession a name
You are called anxiety, depression, and pain

Creative Dreamer

As I lay me down to sleep, into my consciousness should creep

two headed dragons, castles with moats, owls and love-struck kitties in boats,

frogs being kissed, white horses prancing, a handsome prince and his princess dancing.

Is that a mad hatter or a magical wizard riding side-saddle on a slippery lizard?

Words become images that morph into words. Sentences look like a string of blackbirds

They soar through my head as I lay on my pillow, eyes full of grit, brain turned to jello.

I know I must slumber and get some rest so I'll wake up creatively feeling my best.

How can I draw, how can I write when I cannot get to sleep at night?

With the dawn comes the dread I must roll out of bed and get my head on straight.

I will get a blank paper and dream up a caper if I really concentrate.

My brush will reveal in color that’s real a wonderful illustration.

It will all come together. I’ll be light as a feather with a feeling of jubilation!

It’s a bit of angst, a touch of strife to experience a writer’s life.

It’s reaching inside and showing our worth with every gem that we unearth.

And in the end there’s only this…it’s revealing our soul, sharing our bliss.

It’s taking a space that’s empty and bare and creating something magical there.

His Captain and trusted friend, Roland Dower, looked very concerned. “My King, if his warriors were to approach, they would see us and be on their guard and on us before they even came close!”

“I know,” the King said solemnly. “I don’t know what else to do.”

“I do,” a small voice said behind them. There, stepping out of the shadows, was the littlest princess, all of one foot tall and looking at the men, unafraid.

Reviews:Rosie - Readers Favorite Reviewer on Goodreads wrote:

Wow, the smile on my face just does not seem to want to leave! I have read many fables and children’s tales over the years as an Editor and Proof-Reader, but this one completely took me by surprise. Steve Soderquist’s tale of a tiny princess who becomes known as the bravest and smartest warrior in the Kingdom simply blew my mind.

Carol on Amazon wrote:

This story was not only a good lesson about love and peace but the only word for it, ADORABLE.
