A large sum of money. A skilled Private Investigator. A missing book. How could any of these elements ruin one's life? Quite easily, when the work follows you home, threatens to destroy all you know and love, and promises to unleash forces beyond humanity's comprehension upon the world. James Riley is a man with secrets; some seemingly harmless, but when the doctors start forcing the memories to unchain, reality and the truth have only one conclusion... One shattered night.

Excerpt:

He was making for the door. At first, Shamus thought it was Father Malone. But why would the priest be running down the aisle towards the exit?

Shamus called after him, “Malone? Malone, it's me, Shamus. What are you doing father?” The man stopped briefly before entering the narthex. He was tall and heavyset, unlike Malone.

Shamus shouted. “Hey, you! Stop right there. Whatever you're doing. Stop!” But the man was gone before he had finished speaking. Shamus gave chase, but by the time he got into the narthex, the main doors were wide open, and the man was long gone. Shamus ran outside into the wind and rain. But the only thing he saw was two ravens leaving their perches in an old oak tree, at the far end of the pathway. They seemed to be heading north, right into the heart of the storm.

Disheartened, Shamus went back inside and searched the building for any sign of Malone. But he was nowhere to be seen. However, what he found sent shivers down his spine.

The stone altar, which was not to be touched, had been broken in half, its religious paraphernalia cast to the floor and scattered about. On the inside of the broken altar was an empty cavity, large enough to fit a book or at least part of one. The church was nearly 300 years old, so whoever placed “whatever” inside the alter had done so a long time ago.

Immortal is a story filled with adventure, mystery, and thrilling twists. Follow these men as they stumble upon not only their greatest discovery, but possibly their ultimate undoing.

Excerpt:

Daniel woke to Tim’s pleading.
“Daniel are you awake? I keep hearing footsteps in the hallway.”
Daniel glanced at the bed-side clock. “It’s 3:00. Go back to sleep.”
“No, seriously, go check it out.”
“Why me?”
“Wait, listen.”
Daniel got up, walked to the door and put his ear against the wood. What he heard sent chills down his spine. Slow, deliberate footsteps coming from the end of the hallway. Too slow to be an actual person. Too deliberate to be the gait of someone out for a late stroll.
“Holy shit, dude.”
“What the fuck is it? Go check.”
“Why me, you coward?”
“You brought us here. It was your idea. You need to go check it out.”
“Why don’t we just go back to sleep? The steps obviously aren’t meant to do us any harm.”
“How do we know that?”
“Because they haven’t tried to get into our room yet.”
“Yet? Maybe you can accept yet.

You seem to like ghosts. I on the other hand, despise the whole concept.”
Suddenly the steps ceased exactly in front of their door.
“Daniel, what the fuck!” Tim whispered.
Daniel reached for the doorknob.
“Wait, don’t,” Tim whispered hoarsely.
Daniel put a finger up towards his frightened friend. Slowly he turned the knob and eased the door open. Tim pulled the covers over his head. Daniel stepped into the hall.

A Unique and Thrilling Read.

Immortal is unlike any novel I’ve previously read. The author seamlessly combines mystery, suspense, and philosophy into a superb tale about life, death, and everything in between. I highly recommend this novel.

Can we reverse the aging process by thoughts and actions?

Very impressive novel, never mind first novel! David tells a well-rounded story and makes his characters real and compelling. I like the shorter chapters as it kept me wanting to keep turning the pages and see what happened next. Add in two major surprises and David took me for quite a ride. Looking forward to what comes next!!

The rogue hesitated, did not answer and Shade watched as the warriors circled, ready for the kill. Alec nodded and this fucker belonged to them. The rogue’s fear spiked as he was surrounded, and he spat on Alec and said, “Angel.”

Alec’s beast emerged as the young rogue spit at him. Eyes red and fangs bared, he screamed to the heavens, “There is no master named Angel. Kill him!” He watched as a frenzy of warriors tore into him, ripping his limbs free, tearing his head from his body, and leaving nothing recognizable when they were done. Angel. Who the fuck was Angel? And what hell was about to rain down on us now?

Shade watched as the blood spattered, and he turned his back and walked outside for a smoke. He was done for the night and ready to get the hell home to a shower and his woman.

Alec saw the warriors ripping the rogue to shreds and followed Shade outside to find him leaning against the wall, smoking a cigarette. “I know every vampire master on every continent. There is no master named Angel. Does Angel mean anything to you?”

Shade scuffed his heavy boots against the pavement, “Nope. And if you don’t know…” He turned his head to look at Alec, Shade’s bloodied hair and face in such a contrast to Alec’s. “…then we got more hell than either of us could imagine, brother.”

The world is ever-changing. Most men change with it, other men refuse to adjust, and a few men move the world with them.

Whether in primitive days or the ends of civilization, these poor fools find themselves in the worst straits their lifetime had to offer. A gardener. A political writer. A prisoner. A slave. A detective. They’ve all made their beds in the world, but some aren’t ready to lie in them just yet.

Some will drag the world down with them if they can.

Excerpt:

The boy with the green eyes stomps over, Aaron at his heels. “What in the hell is going on?” the boy barks. I note how his rifle is still slung across his back–he must not see us as a threat–but I’m not waiting around to find out for sure. I stand and grip Taylor’s arm again, this time harder. She tries to tear it away, but I’m latched on. She grunts in frustration. “Stop!” I yell at the boy, my shrill voice echoing through the woods. Amazingly, he listens. “I’m two seconds away from teleporting us out of here if you take another step,” I lie.

Understanding sweeps across his face, then awe. It settles into caution.

Aaron holds up his hands in surrender, asking, “Can I at least go break up the boys before they kill each other?”

I hesitate, reluctantly nod. Their sparring sounds like two disgruntled hogs – ear-splitting and brutal. I don’t need another dead friend. Besides, Aaron knows I wouldn’t leave without him. “Then we’ll talk about all this.”

“Get your paws off me,” Taylor spits at me, tugging.

I ignore her.

“You can let go of her, ya know,” the green-eyed boy says. “None of this is necessary.”

I flash him a deadly look. Like I believe anything he has to say. I’ll give them a chance to explain, but I have the upper hand…or so they think. As far as they know, I can get us out of here whenever I want.

While Aaron tries to break up the fight, the bearded man in flannel eyes me. The Changer woman whispers in his ear. I get a better look at her. She reminds me of Blythe in a way, with her silver-laced dreads and laugh lines around her mouth and eyes, but she’s sturdier. Broader. And her irises are celery green.

“Ow!” Cole howls.

We turn to see Aaron twisting Cole’s arm behind his back. Cole falls to his knees. “You gonna chill out, man?” Aaron asks, but he’s not menacing about it. It seems to pain him.

Cole growls but nods, wincing.

The man he attacked staggers to his feet, blinking his one good eye, the other one already swelling shut. Blood drips from his nose and over his lips. “Fuck,” he stammers, blood spraying. He’s lost his hat somewhere in the fray, mud smeared up one side of his face and matting his blond hair.

Cole appears to be untouched, minus a few scrapes and sprigs of foliage in his dreads. His massive shoulders heave with exhaustion. He gave it everything he had. Aaron can’t help but chuckle humorlessly. “I guess you paid attention during. L...” He stops himself from saying his name. A shadow passes over his features. “Training.”

What a great ending to this series. Mira, Cole and Taylor were amazing. To keep fighting after all that happened in book two—respect. There was a chance for humanity to redeem itself at the end of this—and I honestly did not know if that would happen. I’d like to think that people would see the error of their ways and do the right thing, but today’s climate demonstrates otherwise. I was really happy with how this wrapped up. Many were lost along the way, but I was glad those who remained got the ending they did. Such a great series.

So, there was a needed correction for the Cerberus Wikipedia article. Apparently, soothing music makes Cerberus visible, but doesn’t really put it to sleep. Thanks, Orpheus, you piece of shit.

I reached my hand out with my palm facing it, trying to be non-threatening, wondering how the hell could I threaten that thing anyway?

“Good boy…”

Jammer yelled from the truck. “I can see its wang, Nick! So you’re right, it’s a boy… and what a boy!”

“Not helping, Jammer…” I was trying to keep eye contact with three sets of eyes at once.

I felt the tug in the back of my mind. I dropped the bag as I dove to the right and rolled as the wolf head snapped where I was a moment before. I rolled further as the pitbull head buried its snout in the grass where I had just passed.

I rolled back and managed to get to my feet in a crouch. I saw the paw coming and knew the odds were I wasn’t dodging it. I planted my feet and caught it. The paw was larger than my chest, but I wrapped my arms tight around it, getting a good hold and felt it push me, digging my feet in deep and making furrows in the ground under me.

It would have killed a normal man, or a miscreant like Jammer.

“Nick!” Gretchen screamed.

“I’m okay,” I grunted through gritted teeth.

I twisted and bent the paw an unnatural direction. I didn’t break it, but Cerberus wasn’t happy either. It moved and I saw the lab head coming straight for me.

I especially like the fact the author gets the " gun stuff" right. Nothing annoys me more than a character racking the slide on a double barrel shotgun.

When I read the synopsis of Paved with Good Intentions, I had to read it. The language of the blurb had me convinced this was going to be a quirky, witty read…and I was not disappointed!

Our main character Nick, is so sarcastic. This is in first person, so we get to read from his perspective. Even when he’s in the most dangerous of perdicimients, his first instinct is to say something witty. I love it. He made the book for me. The rest was just icing on the already tasty cake.

Paved with Good Intentions is fast-paced and hilarious. In between boughts of laughter, I was holding my breath through all the action. Dick Denny has a knack for creating really unique characters and situations, without getting too unrealistically silly. The story is obviously fiction, but the banter between the characters made it super real feeling.

John Westfall on Amazon wrote:

Dick Denny writes characters you’d want to get to know personally, even if you were afraid they might misunderstand your intentions and try to kill you. Super fun ride, with nuance and soul.

You are invited to take a journey. A journey that is sometimes enlightening , sometimes morbid, sometimes light, sometimes dark, sometimes based in fiction and sometimes all too real.

These stories will upset you, captivate you, make you laugh and cry and may even effect emotions in you that you never knew existed, however, as different as they all are they are seemingly all connected in our hearts and souls.

They possess a deeper theme that brings a frightening reality to the heart of every reader.

Excerpt:

Mexican border, winter, 2016

Nasir Shekau passes over the Mexican border south of Yuma. He isn’t sure why he’s alive. Whether it was a result of a few bad shots from experienced military shooters, or just pure luck. Maybe the two aimed just a bit north or south of the target because they couldn’t bring themselves to end the life of such a brave warrior. The answer is something he’ll never know but inside he hopes it’s the latter. He will not make his way back to Afghanistan. He knows he’ll be tracked down there and possibly given up by his own people.

Lima, Peru. That’s where his dreams lead him. Settle down in a small village just outside the city, overlooking the Pacific. Some say the Pacific has no memory, that it forgives and forgets.

Nasir Shekau is banking on that parable.

He continues his path south. Once he’s over the border, he is free of any American stronghold. The sun peaks out from behind a few fluffy early morning Mexican clouds and he holds his face to the sky to feel the warm rays. They give him a feeling he hasn’t felt in a long time. A feeling like he’s just woken after a long slumber. An invigorating, rejuvenating, euphoric feeling.

It’s the feeling of freedom.

Mr. Boiani has a pension for writing about families and the inner workings that twist and pull until they snap. In the beginning he ties infidelity into a kind of instant Karma that zaps the wholes street. From there we have shorter, detailed snap shots, instead of videos, of more family drama, heightened by wicked intentions, and sometimes monsters.
What can be and should be and what is are the distinctions that are author points out, sometimes in a subtle way, other times it’s with a hammer, but either way it comes as a last page surprise that the reader didn’t see coming.
For short, dark, family stories that steer us outside the boundaries of the law, sometimes morality and other times drift into fantasy this is the book for you.

*FIVE STARS* There are teen vampire books, and then there’s THIS teen vampire book. Funny, sympathetic, and relatable, it’s a welcome departure from a genre you think you already know.

Three friends, one lie…oh, and a boy. No sparkles included.

Aeron is a conqueror and a ruler who has been betrayed and exiled. She has plenty of chances to correct the errors of her ways but just like Issy, she’s too arrogant to admit she’s wrong. Isabeth has the maturity to accept things as they are but like Aeron, she’s too full of herself to see her flaws.

Then there’s Ayrie. Ayrie’s complete lack of self-confidence is overshadowed by her desire to publicly masquerade as the teenager they all pretend to be.

Yeah, they’re vampires. No, they aren’t musically inclined, nor are they great poets. They also don’t sparkle. Aeron can recite every major battle ever and explain why the generals on both sides were morons. Ayrie is a walking, talking medical textbook, and Isabeth just finished her one-hundredth playthrough of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, on the GameCube. The Wii controllers don’t appeal to her at all.

Jamie is too much of a loser to be included in this blurb…or at least he thinks he is. Come on, the guy dumped the head cheerleader! Yet somehow, this book-nerd appeals to the most ancient among them, if she’ll only admit that to herself.

This is not just a romance; there are witches, creepy death- magic-wizards, and more! Truly, a horror story that waits for you to pick up and never put down again. Buy it now!

I walked forward, my black cloak hiding my youthful appearance. With the Honor Guard and Voices behind me, I addressed the real power of the Choir. You always allowed the generals and politicians to think they were important, but it was the cannon fodder who bled and died in the field. I surveyed a segment of the largest standing army in Europe with pride and satisfaction. They were mine to wield as I pleased, and it was time to unleash them.

“Who do you serve?” I asked them.

Another aspect of the ritual—it allows them to feel the choice was theirs to make.

No delay. No thought involved. All ten thousand shouted with one voice. “You, my Goddess!”

“So, serve me now,” I replied. “Here in this land, there are people who think they are above you. That they don't need to bow before your lord. Show them the folly of their ways. Burn their villages. Destroy their livelihoods and bring me their rebellious leaders. Any who do not submit, make examples of them.”

The Voices came forward and shouted, “Her will is known!”

“So it was told, so shall it be!” the Choir roared in reply.

I put my hands out in a form of a benediction. “Go, my Choir, bring me glory.”

Someone nudged me, and I blinked my eyes open rapidly.

“Not often ah catch ye day-dreamin'.”

“A nightmare is better than this,” I said, with a paltry wave of my hand at the pep rally.

Ayrie chuckled. “Aye, wonder what she makes of all of it,” she commented, nodding her head down towards Isabeth.

“I'm surprised she's not in one of those little skirts herself, rah, rah, rahhing herself to death with the rest of insipid cock smitten twats.”

Ayrie cringed, but when Isabeth didn't react, she relaxed. “Oi,” she muttered.

I was given the opportunity to read this book as it was written and it is excellent. You will enjoy the characters and their development. This is the first of a series, so let's all beat Richard up out back for ending things on a cliffhanger. Or not.

There are teen vampire books, and then there’s THIS teen vampire book. Funny, sympathetic, and relatable, it’s a welcome departure from a genre you think you already know. Sequel, please!!
