Most debutantes meet their intendeds at polite societal gatherings, not over a duel in Hyde park. However, Greyland Kingston is not your typical young lady, and her family is far from conventional.

Alexander Hamilton, Duke of Ravenswood, is about to find out how unique the family is when he becomes unwittingly entangled with the newly arrived Kingston's from New Orleans—one family member in particular. With her spirited personality and innocent aversion to all things proper, Greyland Kingston completely throws him off his well-established game.

The gossip fans start to flutter when Greyland, her two older brothers and distinguished father, make their debut. Who is this family? How do they know the Queen? Why does the patriarch look like the ghost of the long-ago Plantagenet King, Edward the IV?

Trouble ensues in the form of jealous women, ambitious men, and a vengeful Irish clan. Alexander quickly finds that having Greyland for his own will come at a steep price…

And he must risk everything to keep her protected.

The sound of thundering hooves trampling over the earth brought Alex’s mind right back to the present. All three men jerked their heads toward the intrusion. A bay steed burst through the bush carrying a wild-eyed girl. Her beautifully carved slender legs were exposed up to her knees and she was missing one of her slippers.

The horse immediately sensed the wolf and reared straight up. Surprisingly, the bareback rider managed to hug tight to the beast’s neck and stayed on. As the front hooves made contact with the ground—and before the horse could rise in protest again—the girl catapulted off the side and unsuccessfully grabbed for the reins. The mare bolted away.

“Damn!” she said, simply annoyed, as if she had lost a shilling rather than a thoroughbred.

“What on earth!” Perkin’s previous calm appearance all but shattered into a thousand pieces in front of them.

“Is that a wolf?” The girl’s sites fixated on Malikite, a glint in her bright eyes, her breathing coming hard, causing her small breasts to rise and fall, threatening to escape a much-too-slack bodice.

Alex stared. Who on earth had helped this poor woman dress? Clearly a dressing-maid with a vengeance. Unless the young lady before them was newly escaped from the asylum. Which might explain the entry.

The girl was completely disheveled. A twig dangled from her raven-black curls. Windblown pink cheeks decorated her milk-white skin and a bead of perspiration highlighted her cupid-bow lips. Her eyes were like the palest green of the sea, and they raged as wild as a developing storm. Never in his wildest dreams had he ever thought a woman could be this...inspiring. Captivating. Alive! She had to be from the asylum, Alex concluded. Someone’s daughter or young bride that had lost her wits and had to be committed.

I was impressed from the beginning! A question was posed- What really happened to the two young princes of York, who were held prisoner in the tower of London by their ambitious uncle following the death of their father, King Edward of York? And, of course, the book does answer that question, quite splendidly in my opinion, for a debut book!
Under His Protection has all the things I look for in a book. Swoon-worthy men, feisty females, descriptions that put you in the room, an exciting story and just enough romance to liven things up! The main characters are all written with great detail and a vast array of emotions are captured.
I must admit to falling a bit in love with most of the characters, and found myself utterly enchanted with this book.
There was no evidence of any grammatical errors, the time line flowed well and the book moved at a very fast clip. I look forward to reading more from this author!

Wow!! What a great book, it was very fast-pace but well written. I love reading historian books like this, I haven’t read one in a while but I’m glad I got to read this book. The author does a fantastic job with the details of the storyline and the character development. Reading this book made me feel as if I was right alongside the characters. The book starts off intense with a brawl. It was very exciting and It had me gasping. But after that the story unfolds into a great romance. It has some twist and turns, which made the story even more exciting. I love Alex and Greyland, they have to be my new favorite book couple. I don’t want to give any of the storyline away but this book is a must read, and this author is fantastic at what she does. I will definitely be reading more of this author’s book she is very talented. Thank you for writing a wonderful book.

This is my first time reading a historical romance. Wow this book drew me in from the beginning. This a fast pace book. I had all kinds of emotions. Stacey Von Haegert wrote this book so that I felt like I was Greyland Kingston. When Greyland met Alexander Hamilton, Duke of Ravenswood, it was love at first sight. Alexander is handsome, strong and Nobel. Swoon. He's exactly what every woman wants. This book leaves you wanting more. Thank goodness this is the first of a trilogy. I recommend this book to every romance and historical reader.

Spanning the last fifty years, this family saga focuses on three generations of women, who grapple with sex and marriage, the elusiveness of success and the power of love to get them through tough times. Told chiefly from the alternating points of view of two sisters who come of age in the 1960's, the story takes us from Princess phones and prom dresses to the Vietnam War, women’s lib, the lure of Hollywood, 9/11 in Manhattan—and a family emergency like no other. Throughout the years the sisters often misread their own hearts or are mistreated by those they care about. When real crisis arises, they are challenged to summons their better angels. But can they?

That’s when Erin leaned over and tilted my head up. I looked into his dark blue eyes, for the first time up close, and I could feel my body quiver. He placed his lips on mine, lightly, making no attempt to pry my lips apart. “Mellie, Mellie,” he whispered, sounding more amused than amorous. (Only guys sure of themselves sound amused after they’ve kissed me. So I assume. He’s the first to do it this way.)

Don’t ask me how I knew what was up with him but I did. Without waiting for me to say anything, he scrambled out of the car, came round to open my door and walked me over to my car.

Once home, I went straight upstairs, not bothering to look in on Callie. Such a zombie my sister’s become, as if she were the one to have flunked the math exam. I slept fitfully, a flutter in the center of my body keeping me awake most of the night.

Back to the public shaming at school, which, unthinkingly, I let myself in for. Should have been Callie to show up for the practice session and to pick up her own robe. As I said, though, she’s practically comatose. Ergo (as she would say if she deigned to speak), there I was out on the patio, hoping to scoot in and out before word of my disgrace got around. But it was not to be. News of my failing grade did seep out, sooner than I had anticipated.

Before I can retreat inside to the bathroom, Sherry takes my hand and gives me an elaborate hug, making a big show of sympathizing. Several of the other girls look on with pained faces painted on. As if they weren’t pleased as punch.

“We’re in shock, Mellie. It’s so not fair. He must have had it in for you, Dr. Faulkner,” Sherry laments, batting her mascara-caked cow eyes at me.

The only one of the lot who stands aloof  is Doreen, puffing on a Camel and looking superior to the petty machinations on the patio where the senior girls congregate. Instead, she regards me coolly. I acknowledge her with a glance but say nothing. She flicks her cigarette butt into the nearby bushes before swiveling her hips back inside.

During the bloody American Civil War, the stark reality of death leads one young man on a course of revenge that takes him from his quiet farm in northern Alabama to the horrific battlefields of Virginia and Pennsylvania.

On Christmas Eve 1862, David Summers hears the dreaded news: his father has perished at the Battle of Fredericksburg. Reeling with grief and thoughts of vengeance, David enlists and sets off for Richmond to join the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.

But once in the cavalry, David’s life changes drastically, and his dream of glamorous chivalry becomes nothing but a cold, cruel existence of pain and suffering. He is hurled into one battle after another, and his desire for revenge wanes when he experiences first-hand the catastrophes of war.

A haunting look at the human side of one of America’s most tragic conflicts, A Beckoning Hellfire speaks to the delusion of war’s idealism.

What a great read! The author covers the history so very well and adds brilliance as she brings you into the human side of war. The characters are vivid and well defined.
The story is exciting and thought provoking throughout. It questions the validity of war as well as the necessity.
By using one main character, you almost feel as though you are a member of his family.
It ends in a manner that screams for a sequel. (Don't peek).
She has written a prequel, "A beautiful Glittering Lie" and I'm about to read it.

This is the second book in the Renegade series by J.D.R. Hawkins. I was lucky enough to have both the books in hand when I started reading and it has been a pleasure to be able to continue the series. The author’s writing just pulls you in and it is like watching a saga unfold. The descriptions are vivid and emotions run high through both the books. It was hard not to fall for the characters even when I knew that during war lives are lost. It is to the author’s credit that the characters felt real, as did the plot.

With the death of Hiram, David is spurred to go ahead and enlist in the war. Unlike his father, he doesn’t really believe in the cause. He is more fired up to hit back for his father’s death and he convinces his best friend to enlist alongside him. What follows is a hard journey of discovering the truth about war.

This is a series that has completely sucked me in and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book.

In the spring of 1861, a country once united is fractured by war. Half of America chooses to fight for the Confederate cause; the other, for unification. In north Alabama, the majority favors remaining in the Union, but when the state secedes, many come to her defense. Such is the case with Hiram Summers, a farmer and father of three. He decides to enlist, and his son, David, also desires to go, but is instead obligated to stay behind.

Hiram travels to Virginia with the Fourth Alabama Infantry Regiment. Although he doesn’t intentionally seek out adventure, he is quickly and inevitably thrust into combat. In the meantime, David searches for adventure at home by traipsing to Huntsville with his best friend, Jake Kimball, to scrutinize invading Yankees. Their escapade turns sour when they discover the true meaning of war, and after two years of service, Hiram sees enough tragedy to last a lifetime.

A Beautiful Glittering Lie addresses the naivety of a young country torn by irreparable conflict, a father who feels he must defend his home, and a young man who longs for adventure, regardless of the perilous cost.

A horse nickered from the street, distracting David. His gaze meandered over the crowd of a few hundred. Although it was a Monday, most were dressed in their Sunday finery, complete with hats, shawls, topcoats, and hooped skirts. Some had their children in tow. People, both black and white, stood in awe of the newly elected official, and David wondered if they had the same thing on their minds as he did. Where is this man leading us?

“There should be a well-instructed and disciplined army,” Davis continued, “more numerous than would usually be required on a peace establishment …”

Jake and David threw awestruck glances at each other from under their slouch hats.

“It’s jist as I thought,” Bud whispered ominously.

Hiram gave him a doubtful look.

“I also suggest that, for the protection of our harbors and commerce on the high seas, a navy adapted to those objects will be required,” said Davis.

“Well, I’m jinin’ the navy, then,” Jake proclaimed.

“I’m fixin’ to jine the army,” added David.

They both snickered at each other and were unable to stop. Afraid that their laughter would spark an outrage, David covered his mouth with his hand, trying to suppress the urge.

“Shhh!” Jenny’s stare bore into them, making their snickers cease.

Hiram leaned in close to his son. “You two young’uns need to keep it down,” he growled.

She glanced at Maggie and back down at the soldier. Dust and specks of blood covered his anguished face. Sweat and tears had trickled down, leaving tiny trails along his cheeks and temples. Anna’s heart grew heavy at the sight, but she resolved to save him. Her pity gave her power. She knew what she had to do, so she mustered her own authority.
“I’m sorry I don’t have anything to give you for the pain,” she said sympathetically. “I only wish we had some laudanum or chloroform.” She walked over to the black kettle, used the prongs to extract the needles and knife from the scalding hot water, and proceeded to thread a needle. “Abigail,” she said, “please fetch Father’s good bourbon.”
Her little sister ran downstairs, followed by Claudia.

> Maggie pulled a wooden chair from its place against the wall and moved it over to the bedside. Seating herself, she proceeded to thread the needle Anna had given her.
Abigail ran back in, panting, and handed the amber bottle to Anna. She uncorked it and held it to the soldier’s lips. He took a swallow. She prompted him to take a few more.
“Abigail, when I tell you to, place a towel in his mouth,” Anna instructed her little sister.
“Why?” Maggie asked sarcastically. “So no one will hear him scream while we torture him?”
Anna sneered at her sister. She looked at the soldier, surprised to see he was gawking at her, his eyes wide with fright and his lower lip quivering.
“Are y’all—witches?” he asked, terror sweeping over his face.
“Now see what you’ve done,” Anna scolded.
Maggie snickered.
Anna glared at her sister. Looking back at the young man, she said, “No, we’re not witches.”
She didn’t think he believed her.
Maggie sat near the foot of the bed, gazing down at their new discovery. “Why are we going to all of this trouble, Anna? He is a Confederate, after all.”
“Because it is our Christian duty. If we don’t try to help him, God will surely cast his wrath upon us later on.”
This explanation seemed sufficient enough for Maggie, who glowered.

5.0 out of 5 stars -- A great read!

I admire the author's ability to take us back into the past. I've read her other historical novels (A Beautiful Glittering Lie and A Beckoning Hellfire ) so I know how well she can weave a story set in the Civil War period.

The characters are well developed and we get the feeling that we too are involved in their lives. Love knows no boundaries, no limits and no questions of North and South during the dramatic Civil War. Fact and fiction are the author's food for thought as she mixes both to give an exciting tale.

Love, war and the difficulties we can only imagine, leap up from the pages of this book. An intriguing read that I recommend to all but especially those historical novel fans in particular.

What can be said of Hell, when at its most quiet, I was most terrified? The explosions that had rocked every fiber of my being and made my bones feel like they could simply shatter like tempered glass still resonated.
I looked over at the wounded, wondering if I had the same haunted look in my eyes, and thought I probably did. In this war, no one leaves. No one goes home...and everyone is a casualty of war.

It created the maximum amount of terror for the VC and NVA to shell at night in civilian areas, when everyone was supposedly safe and secure in their own homes. People clamored out of their little dwellings, women screaming, babies and children crying. This was what the VC wanted, fear. A little old woman ran up to me and asked me in a trembling voice if I knew how big the shells were. I couldn’t think of a comforting reply. A bullet from a handgun, a shell from a howitzer, they could both kill.

From his window on the top floor of the boarding house Curtis saw the two women step out of the cab, Aurelia turning her head this way and that, warily. Across Ramparts Street an old man sat on a stoop polishing a trumpet; further down two pig-tailed girls played at hopscotch. Otherwise no one was about. Curtis surveyed the neat if unassuming room he had inhabited for the last week. He pulled down the oilcloth shade against the low winter sun and walked out to the landing. As arranged, Rufus had awaited the two at the front door. Soft voices. The stairs creaked as first he led Claudette to his own room on the first floor and then escorted Aurelia up to the third.

Anxious, she did not unpin her hat. Rather, she stood in the middle of the room, uncertain, until Curtis scrambled to pull up the lone armchair.

“Thank you,” she murmured, “though I shouldn’t have come. It’s too—”

“It’s all right, Aurelia. We don’t have to…”

“No, you deserve to know why.” The echo of Hiram’s insult to her body bounced off the walls, though only Aurelia could hear it. She glanced around at the tiny bed, the desk piled with charts and maps, the lone window. Curtis took her hand. The sound grew fainter.

However many other women he had lain with—pleasantly enough, though more than one partner saw the look of elsewhere in his eyes—only this one made his heart leap up. Despite.

“They are tied up with string, in a box. Back in Vicksburg. I couldn’t bear—” He looked confused. “The letters you sent me. Unopened still.”

   “You were unwell.”

“Not so. Someday I will be able to tell you, that is, though, as of today, it no longer—” (Matters. At that moment Aurelia knew only love, their love, mattered, however impossible, however imperiling.)

A tap at the door disrupted her jagged thoughts.

“For the years to come,” Curtis murmured in her ear as his fingers released her hand. “Now go, and embrace your life.”

Plaintive notes of Amazing Grace rose from the sidewalk below.
