CJ Foster’s A Seaside Story brings a compelling tale of love, loss, and the decisions that shape our future…

Love or money? Sometimes it’s not so simple.

Kate Toscano’s life is upended when her sister is killed in a car accident. This jet-setting writer for a trendy Las Vegas magazine is now the guardian of her five-year-old, autistic nephew, Jimmy, and is forced to move back home. Kate’s mother is skeptical about bringing a young, special needs child into her well-structured and organized home in Avalon Bay, but what other choice does Kate have?

As Kate struggles to begin her life anew, she runs into John Neal, her old high school flame. Their parting fourteen years prior was bittersweet when Kate left home to get her degree in journalism and follow her dreams. Old feelings are rekindled, but not all flames that burn are meant to stay lit, so when she learns their timing is off, yet again, she knows it’s time to make a decision: Choose security, or take a bold chance on an uncertain future.

If only it were so easy.

Fans of Jodi Picoult and Kristin Hannah will devour this “compelling” and “unforgettable” coming-of-age story in one sitting. Get your copy today!

The source of her current vexation was readily apparent from the clue of only one pronoun.  “Just look at what he’s gone and done now!” she snapped as Kate reached the open door and, brushing past her, stepped inside.

She suppressed a smile at the sight of all her mother’s shoes and slippers placed toe-to-heel in a colorful serpentine across the carpet.  Just over her shoulder, she heard Lydia mutter that she had absolutely no idea what had gotten into him to make such a mess of her footwear.  That the young perpetrator was nowhere in sight filled Kate with more concern than her mother’s assessment that it would probably take at least a month of Sundays to restore order to her closet.  “Jimmy?” she gently called out.  “Jimmy, honey, where are you?”

A giggle from behind the wicker clothes hamper rewarded Kate’s patience.  Grape jam from his morning’s toast still creased the corners of his mouth as he burst out of his hiding place like a miniature cannonball heading for the hallway.  Kate intercepted him and held him in her arms as he struggled to get free.  The dark blond hair she had so meticulously combed after breakfast was already unruly and one of his shoes, she noticed, was missing.  “Parade!” he squealed, pointing to his pint-sized contribution to the colorful line-up as he broke free from his aunt and returned to the shoes.  “Parade!”

“It’s a beautiful parade,” Kate praised him. “But we need to put all of these back in Nana’s closet now, okay?”

“Parade!” Jimmy shouted again, this time louder.

From the corner of her eye, Kate could see her mother folding her arms and shaking her head.  Truth be told, she could also read exactly what was running through Lydia’s mind; specifically, the same script she’d been playing over and over ever since Jimmy’s condition had first been diagnosed.  It was Cassy’s deadbeat ex—and not a twist of fate—whom Lydia would steadfastly blame throughout all eternity for providing the genes that made her first grandchild defective.

“You know a lot about automobiles, Mr. Riley?” asked Mictlan.

James shrugged. “No. Not really,” he said.

“And yet you seem very familiar with the mechanics of this vehicle of yours.”

“Well, yeah. It's my car.”

The doctor scrawled something in his notes. “Interesting,” he replied.

“What is?” sputtered James. He was feeling light-headed as the drug made itself known once more.

The doctor stared at him. His cold eyes seemed to probe James's very soul which seemed to cause his to shiver. “Oh, it's nothing that concerns you right now. We'll talk more about this matter later. What is important at the moment is filling in the gaps, and there are so many that need filling. So many. Now, please, continue.”

What if a man lost his moral compass between right and wrong, good and evil, mental stability and insanity?

John Corbin has been investigating, catching, and convicting murderers, rapists, and pedophiles for twenty years as a Seattle detective. But lately, someone has been beating him to the punch and eliminating these vile criminals before he can apprehend them. John is learning that there is a thin line between innocent or guilty, good or evil, alive or dead.

By definition, a thin line is a very narrow division between two alternatives. Some being exact opposites, while others are separated by the narrowest of threads. This novel follows this definition to the letter. In life, many situations aren't just black or white. There is usually a modicum of grey to fill in the space. Who is right? Who is wrong? Who is good? Who is evil? Perhaps everyone at one time or another lies somewhere in the middle.

A Thin Line is a tale that will immediately draw you in and keep you guessing. A suspenseful psychological thriller with twists and turns that will toy with your mind and emotions, driven by a chilling narrative that builds the tension right up until its explosive conclusion.

By the time John and Todd had arrived at the Northgate Mall, it had already been shut down and closed off. No way in. No way out. The perp had taken a light machine gun into the mall and open fired on the unsuspecting consumers. There were bodies splayed from the Sunglass Hut to the food court, blood everywhere, a few already dead and another ten to twenty seriously injured. The perp had taken a hostage and barricaded himself inside Victoria's Secret. Why he did it, no one had discovered yet. The police were setting up in the Bath and Body Works directly across from Victoria's Secret. John and Todd entered through the back entrance that connected to the parking lot. “Good morning. I’m Detective Corbin, and this is Detective McGrath,” John said as he approached the group of officers huddled together discussing tactics.

“Hello detectives, we were instructed to hand the lead over to you two. I am Officer Wilson. This is Officer Taft, Officer Bianco, and Officer Getz.”

“Good morning, officers,” Todd said.

“What does he want?” John asked.

“He has asked for safe passage out and a car waiting for him.”

“Why?” John asked. “He had that before he shot up the mall. I’m not buying it. It’s just a diversion. He has other plans.”

“Sir, he claims once he is out he will free the hostage. We shouldn't do anything to disrupt the hostages’ safety.”

“I will consider your thoughts,” John said. “Any info on the perp or the hostage? Identities?”

“He is in his thirties. Caucasian. No ID, yet. Female hostage. Twenties. No ID. “

“Alright. I need communication with him,” John said.

Reviews:on Amazon:

This story is one to make you think about right and wrong and how easy it is to step over that "thin line" that divides them. Are there crimes so horrific that it's okay to take justice into your own hands? The killer certainly thinks so. You often hear, "Make the punishment fit the crime." If the monsters you come across in this story knew what their punishment would be, I bet they'd have had second thoughts about doing the beastly things they did. And yes, some of them will make you ill thinking about it. If you're sensitive to the cruelty one person can do to another human or an animal, you might want to pass on this book. Despite some editing hiccups, this is a book that kept my interest. The further I got into it, the more intense it became, with plenty of unexpected outcomes.

on Amazon:

The Thin Line is an accurate name for this vigilante crime novel. The law doesn’t always equate to justice. The separation in between right and wrong and retribution is indeed a thin line. The author shows us a detective with an uncanny knack for honing in on the bad guys. That skill is often brought out by his conversations with his bartender.
Once the stage is set and we find out the victims that detective is investigating are perpetrators of heinous crimes then us, the reader, starts to lose a little empathy for them. But, whoever is killing them is also an animal and that’s where the intrigue and the provocative thought process kicks in.
I found the book stimulating and can’t wait to read the next in the series.

on Amazon:

I believe that the goal of every writer regardless of what genre they write is to write a book that will stay with the reader after the last page.
You will read this book and in certain chapters, it will be so disturbing that you will wonder what is wrong with the guy writing this book, why is this book so DARK. Then you will stop and realize that crimes like this happen every single day. The author just finds a way of forcing you to deal with them.

Nature vs Nurture is one of the oldest arguments in the history of psychology, with no clear answer. This book will challenge all your beliefs. What causes one person to cross that line, is it a gut instinct, or something more?

After each chapter. you will ask yourself what could possibly happen next and how does this all tie together.

If Psychological Suspense is what you’re looking for this book delivers. I can only hope we get to revisit some of the main characters in a second book.

Excerpt:

He was making for the door. At first, Shamus thought it was Father Malone. But why would the priest be running down the aisle towards the exit?

Shamus called after him, “Malone? Malone, it's me, Shamus. What are you doing father?” The man stopped briefly before entering the narthex. He was tall and heavyset, unlike Malone.

Shamus shouted. “Hey, you! Stop right there. Whatever you're doing. Stop!” But the man was gone before he had finished speaking. Shamus gave chase, but by the time he got into the narthex, the main doors were wide open, and the man was long gone. Shamus ran outside into the wind and rain. But the only thing he saw was two ravens leaving their perches in an old oak tree, at the far end of the pathway. They seemed to be heading north, right into the heart of the storm.

Disheartened, Shamus went back inside and searched the building for any sign of Malone. But he was nowhere to be seen. However, what he found sent shivers down his spine.

The stone altar, which was not to be touched, had been broken in half, its religious paraphernalia cast to the floor and scattered about. On the inside of the broken altar was an empty cavity, large enough to fit a book or at least part of one. The church was nearly 300 years old, so whoever placed “whatever” inside the alter had done so a long time ago.

Where is Gabriel Clay?

The search is on for missing twelve-year-old, Gabriel Clay. Few know Gabriel has a secret. Dangers are built-in with his secret. Seasoned detectives, Ben Schwartz and Al Di Natale have joined the rest of Boston in what many call a fool’s errand. The Boston area the boy and his grandmother live in is plagued with drugs and violence. However, the school he attends, George Washington Carver Charter School, offers a first-rate education and an outstanding basketball program.

Wounded Army captain, Ty Douglass, a graduate himself, returns from Afghanistan and joins the hunt. Douglass connects with old friends, Solomon Greer and Charles O’Toole, aka Tool. They share a tragedy from their youth; the unsolved murder of a friend. Empty Doorways has many secrets. Gabriel Clay has his, City Councilor Marty Doyle has his own, and Douglass wonders if Greer and Tool, whose illegal business is becoming more treacherous, know more about their friend’s death than they are admitting. In order to solve this case, the two detectives must risk their lives to uncover the secrets.

Otherwise, there will be more empty doorways unfilled because loved ones are never coming home.

His blue police light flashing on the dash, Di Natale pushed his Mustang up to 80. Ahead was the exit for Dorchester Bay. Di Natale had forgotten his LED flashlight. In a pinch, he’d use the little light on his smart phone to make the arrest. He wished he had his Army night vision goggles. He felt prepared, though. His mission was to confirm if the tip about the shipment was real. Then he’d call in help.

But it was risky and not sanctioned by police procedures. He should have informed his superiors before he left.  If a professional killer was overseeing the delivery, Di Natale could get himself killed and the killer gets away. Would he be doing this on his own, if he was still with his wife Donna and son Chris? Maybe not. Without his family, which he was losing with the divorce, he had less to lose. He drove onto the road to the beach and yacht club. He put his police light back into the glove box.

Di Natale had on his ballistic vest, with pockets for four full magazines and his cell phone. Clipped to his vest shoulder strap was a walkie talkie on a police frequency. On his patrolman’s belt rested his holstered Glock 9mm, a set of cuffs, and a Spyderco knife in a scabbard. He wore hiking boots with dark wool socks, black jeans, a black sweatshirt under the vest, a dark blue nylon rain jacket, with green neon letters, P-O-L-I-C-E on the back, and a blue Boston PD baseball cap. He slowed the Mustang to look for a spot near the coordinates Hernandez gave him. Close enough, he  parked, the beach and the ocean in front. He smelled salt in the wind. He got a call.

“I’m on my way, Mr. Citizen Soldier,” said Schwartz. He was pissed. “We should call in SWAT and alert Boston PD.”

“Right, except won’t we look like the tail end of a baboon when all we got to show for this tip is sand in everyone’s shoes? Besides, if we make this arrest, we might get promotions.”

“Unless they’re posthumous,” said Schwartz.

Samael didn’t know how Hope would feel about the fact he had already met her parents. Actually, Dan and he had spent many hours together. Samael did it to keep Dan ignorant about what was truly going on around him. It was an added benefit that he got to hear all about Hope in the process.

Samael leaned on the doorframe and accidentally hit the doorbell. “Crap,” he whispered to himself. He had never been clumsy in his life, but she had knocked him totally off-kilter.

Hope slung the door open and took his breath away. She was yanking at her clothes with one hand and fussing with a strand of her hair with the other. Samael was rendered useless. The new feelings he was experiencing surged. He had to pull himself together, so he didn’t scare her off.

He pressed his hands above his head to grip both sides of the doorframe. It was his way of trying to look casual, like she wasn’t his exception.

But she was.

Samael gave her his uneven dazzling smile to hide his emotions.

“Hey, Angel. Do I get to come in, or are you going to keep running from me?” He winked, knowing his nerves couldn’t handle hearing no.

“I’m not running from you anymore.”

“I don’t know. You, little lady, are good at running. Are you going to ask me in?”

“Why don’t you come in?” Hope asked.

“You really should be careful who you invite into your home,” he warned as he stepped into the house.

“Why? Are you going to hurt me?” Hope asked, then sunk her teeth deep into her lip.

“Never, but some people are not as trustworthy.” Samael glared down at Hope. “When sin knocks, don’t answer.” He gripped both of her hands in his. It amazed him how one small touch from her could set his skin on fire.

“I’ll try to remember that,” Hope said.

This book was awesome, great storyline, great characters. I thought he was a vampire, huh, fooled me. They had so many trials, mostly because of who & what he was, but their love overcame all. Lots of tears & tissues, some of it was really sad. Is there another, would love to see them complete their story. Absolutely loved it, wish there was more.

Where do the lines blur between justice and sacrifice?

Run by the beautiful and charismatic woman known only as Bow, Themis is an organisation created with the sole purpose of doling out justice—justice that picks up where the law fails. When fifteen-year-old Liberty begins questioning the very essence of what she’d been taught all her life, those who have nurtured her are faced with the decision to either continue to give her the protection she has been allowed or seal her fate within its walls.

No matter their decision, each follower is weighed down by the consequences of their decisions as they establish where their true loyalty lies. With the list of those missing growing, the police continue to be frustrated as they attempt to uncover what’s really going on.

As Pippa and Alfie begin to unravel the web of lies and deceit that cover Themis’ trail, they endanger many lives, including their own and those closest to them. As their tips run cold and the body count increases, the police are drawn into a cat-and-mouse game with an underground vigilante and her dedicated followers, with a taste for blood and an absolute sense of justice.

One young woman holds the key, but will she turn the locks of Themis?

Whilst this book is as far away from my comfort zone as you can possibly get, I LOVED it!! Quite some time ago, I read this author's first book, Valor Diamond. That was good - but this is a belter! I cannot believe how mature her writing has become. She's really grown as an author. And let me tell you, she has a sick mind!! So, Themis. What's it all about? Well, without giving too much away, it's an organisation headed up by the fearsome Bow; a woman you definitely don't want to mess with or get on the wrong side of. With her team of followers, Bow is hell bent on bringing her own kind of justice to certain people who have wronged her throughout her life. Yes she is a nasty piece of work, but by the end of the book I felt real sympathy towards her and completely 'got' her. The book is gory, and really difficult to read in places. Be warned, it contains graphic descriptions of physical child abuse and an incident of animal cruelty, so if you find these subjects hard to deal with you might want to steer clear! Me on the other hand, am desperate for a sequel because the ending is sooo ripe for a follow up. Brilliant stuff.

This novel is a page turner if ever I’ve read one! After only reading the first few sentences I found myself already enthralled in the somewhat twisted and intriguing plot, and with the quick paced story-telling that the author achieves, it is one that could easily be unravelled in one sitting. With dark themes and disturbing imagery throughout, this novel manages to encapsulate the feeling of “not-wanting-to-look-but-can’t-look-away” within the reader (in the best way). The author’s use of various perspectives in each chapter of the novel allows the reader further insight to all of her characters, and I was surprised when I found that I actually felt for, and could understand the ‘villain’ of the piece: Bow, whose actions throughout are very difficult to justify. Themis is a captivating read that will have you constantly wondering how this is going to pan out, along with shuddering, and will leave you wanting more. I highly recommend, provided that you’re not too squeamish!

Excerpt:

After spending a good twenty minutes experimenting with the female underwear, the curious long-haired boy took the plastic Ziploc bag from his sandwich and turned it inside out. Carefully folding the panties into a small neat cube, he placed them inside. The zip wouldn’t seal, but the boy rolled up the edges firmly.

After looking for a place to hide them, he lifted a plank and placed the panties in their weather-tight casing underneath and returned the board to its original position. He then kicked some loose hay over the area to further conceal it.

Job done now, he smoked three more cigarettes. The radio played softly in the background. A weepy voice sang about lost love over a slow, strumming guitar. Not his style, but he was too submerged in thought to get up and change the station.

By now, Jay had a small black and white notebook on his lap and held a yellow number two pencil between his fingers. Leaning at the edge of the crate, back hunched, head forward, eyes staring but seeing nothing.

Think, mother-fucker, think.

Suddenly it came to him. The pencil began to scribble wildly, sketching out some crude squares with triangles attached to the tops.

It was mid-afternoon and the flock had been sold down to about one hundred and fifty birds. We had been up and down most of the streets at least twice. Half the houses in town had bought one and sales were beginning to fall off when a deputy showed up with a red-faced man wearing a bloody apron. “You boys licensed to sell them turkeys?” This from the deputy.

“Hell, these turkeys are selling themselves,” I said.

“Don’t be funning me, boys,” he said. “You got to take them birds outside the city limits.”

The man in the apron was snorting and fuming. “Arrest them, officer,” he said. “They’re costing me a fortune.” The deputy give him a baleful eye and he stood down.

“You wouldn’t be the grocer, would you?” I enquired.

“I am the proprietor of Sam’s Market,” he said, pulling himself to his full height, which was a good two inches less than mine.

“Do you have a license to sell in the city limits?” I asked.

“I do,” he said.

“These birds have been going like hotcakes all day long at the prices you see on this sign,” I said. “How about you buy them from us and sell them yourself at a big markup?”

He tried to see the trap in that and couldn’t. “How much do you want?”

“A dollar seventy-five each, or we trot them just outside the city limits and sell them from there,” I said. “You can price them at two-fifty for the small ones and three-fifty for the big ones and make yourself more than a good profit.”

He said to the deputy, “Can they do that? Sell outside the city?”

“They can,” said the deputy. “No law against it.”

“Greenville being on the small side,” I said, “it’s not all that far to the city limits.”

“Not in any direction,” put in Tom.

Grocer Sam started to warm up to the idea. “A dollar and a quarter? Will you go one twenty-five?”

“We stand on one-fifty,” I said. “Firm, or we ruin your Thanksgiving trade.” Privately, I reckoned we had already ruined it. He was going to find it surprisingly hard to sell turkeys for Thanksgiving.

He didn’t want to pay that much, but I guess he thought he would turn his money over fast, because he did a quick count of the birds and made us wait with the deputy while he ran back to his store for the money. Folks who had been watching the entertainment knew the birds would soon be going at a dear price and we sold six at two dollars each while Grocer Sam was gone; the deputy didn’t object; in fact, he thought it was funny. We even gave him a bird for himself, as a courtesy.

For New Years 2019, I vowed to spend less time on my iPhone/computer and more time reading, an activity that leaves me feeling grounded and whole. Dallas's book arrived during the rainy cold weekend before New Years Eve. I donned slippers and robe, build a fire in the wood stove and curled up in a comfortable chair, certain I was in for a treat. I was not disappointed. The style and characters of the book remind me of the best of Mark Twain -- engaging and full of people to love. It's a view into another time, another place, unfamiliar -- yet I felt at home. A very good read. You are sure to enjoy.

When Alexander Sullivan returned to his hometown of Cedar Falls, Louisiana after a seven-year absence, he had no idea his heart would still react to her. Julia Whitmore was his closest friend when they were children, but things were different, and she was now off-limits to him. Still, it is the forbidden fruit that is often the sweetest and most desired, but a taste will cost them dearly.

After a brief love affair, Alexander’s obligations to his family tear him away from Julia, leaving her broken beyond repair and her reputation in ruins. With time against her, she must resort to scandal and deceit to secure a husband before it’s too late.

Is Eric Dalton as ignorant as Julia believes, or is he hiding his own dark secrets and motives?

Instantly, Julia’s face burned red with embarrassment. Slowly, she lifted her eyes from the ground and met his sapphire blue gaze.

Her breaths quickened, her heart fluttered, and her knees threatened to crumble under the weight of his stare.

All of her self-control came cascading down at the sight of his wide, dimpled smile. Oh, how she missed that smile.

Tears began to sting the inner corners of her eyes. She tried to fight them back but failed. The warm liquid dripped down her cheeks, and onto her lips as Alexander’s steps brought him closer to her.

His heart was in an uproar. It hammered against the wall of his chest with wild anticipation to have his arms around her.

He saw no one else in that moment.

No one else mattered.

Alexander took longer more vigorous steps to close the distance that would finally bring him face to face with Julia.

Upon reaching her, he wrapped his arms around her, pulled her close to his chest and kissed the top of her head before lifting her to the sky.

“You cannot possibly know how much I’ve missed you,” he confessed in a velvet whisper as he brought her back down, and into his arms again. The feel of her so close brought life and blood back into his limbs, which until this moment felt numb and useless. He took a deep breath as his cheek rested against her golden curls and welcomed the jasmine scent that filled him and awakened his soul.  He could not believe the gorgeous woman before him was the same frail creature he left behind. She had filled out in all the right places and had become even more beautiful than he remembered.

“You are absolutely breathtaking,” he said as his forehead touched hers gently.

Julia blushed and cleared her throat in an attempt to silence her rapidly increasing pulse.  He stole her words, her very breath and her heart all in a moment’s time. She wanted to forget the painful past without him, the hole in her heart that he carved with his seven-year silence. But she promised herself she would never forgive him.
