Sherman Lancaster has lived 119 years. The only thing he fears is living 119 more.

Sherman wields a divine sword named DeeDee and delivers God’s justice to those who cross the line. Sherman’s two great-grandsons are coming to stay with him. The boys believe it’s because their mother can’t afford daycare. Sherman knows the truth—one of the boys will become his apprentice.

Sherman has sent legions of demons back to hell. He’s killed enough men to decimate a small country—but the odds are stacked against him this time. Before an apprentice can be named, Sherman must confront an enemy who threatens to unravel everything and doom him to another 119 years behind the sword.
He’s old and he’s tired.

Sherman Lancaster lives by a simple code to which there are no exceptions: The Guilty must pay.

Excerpt:

The boys were wide-eyed and fully convinced they were dreaming. Whether it was a nightmare or a fantasy hadn’t been decided. They wanted to say something, but their vocabulary failed them. Everything they knew about the world changed. Their one constant was Sherman. They turned to him for comfort but found none.
Their great-grandpa was no longer the old man they knew. In the warmth of the Clearing, Sherman pulled off his coat and toboggan. Wearing only boots, jeans, and a tee-shirt, Sherman resembled their great-grandpa, but it was a slight resemblance only. His bald head was gone. In its place was a brown, floppy mop that touched his ears and curled. His skin was healthy, tight, and brown, and his ugly, black and sinister-crimson age spots vanished as if erased by God’s time-eraser. He was changed, new, and somehow fresh.
Sherman was young again, looked as young as Piper and Sebastian’s mama and daddy.

Muscles ran like steel cables through his chest and arms, and his leg muscles bulged and threatened to shred his jeans Hulk-style each time he stepped. He looked taller, and a ruler would have proven it a fact. He stood three inches taller and weighed a couple hundred pounds more. His ears and nose were again proportionate to his head.
This wasn’t Sherman’s young body. It was his spirit body, a term that would’ve meant nothing to Piper and Sebastian if Sherman had told them, so he didn’t. He let them think he was young again.
The zigzag doorway zipped itself shut behind them, and the Clearing came to life.

God, satan, avenging angels, a magical sword and evil humans. This author captures the essence of evildoers in this book. I couldn't wait for the guilty to pay and pay they did.

This is not a romance novel. Wicked and intense. Lots of sin going on down in Mississippi. Highly recommended reading.

Amazon Cystomer on Amazon wrote:

Wow! The author does a great job depicting the battle between good and evil! The characters were well developed and I enjoyed watching their stories unfold. It has a little something for everyone. I also liked the fresh and new ideas about a magical sword.

Morgan on Amazon wrote:

This book is intense. Sherman, the main character, is an old man telling his great grandsons about his past. While hiding many secrets from them, he is preparing one of them for their future. The grand-kids love hearing their great grandpa's stories, it takes them away from their own problems. Lots of twists and turns. I won't give away the details, but it's worth a read.

Spanning the last ten years, Elizabeth Guider's unflinching but empathetic novel about finding yourself after divorce is a modern-day anatomy of love...

"We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give."

Dr. Ashton Mather Cole and his wife, Dr. Deidre Durrell Cole, are two college professors in a small Ohio town with a seemingly perfect marriage. But when Ashton's love affair with one of his students comes to light, everyone is left rattled, aggrieved, or bent on revenge.

Over the course of ten years, they and those around them strive--sometimes painfully, sometimes comically--to right themselves. New relationships don't come without their own false starts and sorrowful stops. Until...

Fans of Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love" and Meg Wolitzer's "The Wife" will devour this "insightful" and "heartfelt" Women's Fiction novel in one sitting.

"Spoiler! I absolutely loved this book. Their lives lured me in and I was there with them - in every twist of their journey." -Wendy Oberman, Novelist and Playwright

"The author has a knack for getting you to embrace her characters, however fallible and shortsighted, and believe in them." - Suzy Arthur, Author

More than these particulars, Jennifer did not feel it incumbent upon her to elaborate. In pleading her case to her parent, she had been vague about Dr. Cole's age, which she only knew because she had googled him early on during that poetry seminar she had signed up for. In truth, she had been intrigued by the word metaphysical, and needed just three more credits to graduate. She had not a clue who John Donne was. From the outset, though, she had admired how pleasantly the professor had called upon students, and no matter how off-base or banal their comments, he would find some nugget in the dross to burnish. Whenever she was asked to expound on an assignment, he seemed at pains to pull something arresting out of her mumbled remarks.

“If I understand you rightly—Miss, Miss Hazelton is it?—you are suggesting that Marvell's tone is more ironic than urgent when he makes his plea to the beloved. Would that be a fair assessment of how you read the stanzas?” And, yes, it would be henceforth how she read them, glancing around to note that her fellow students were impressed (except for her friend Kimberly, who knew her all too well).

Up to then, Jennifer had relied, heavily and successfully, on her pretty face but, thanks mainly to that class, it occurred to her that a functioning brain could be amusing as well. That explained her initial attraction to the relationship, and why she was so passionate about it; Ashton was passionate too but in a more basic sense. He was surrounded, if not smothered, by brainy people, starting with his wife. He craved Jennifer's body.

Bravo to Elizabeth Guider, whose deeply absorbing novel tracks the transformation of a family impacted by the father’s decision to leave after falling into a passionate but ill-fated love affair. Painted in realistic and very sensitive tones, the novel delves into the mind of the spurned wife, Dierdre, who climbs out of her intense feelings of insecurity and failure to discover new career paths and adventuresome romances. All the while she must deal with the sometimes-secret troubles of her gifted twin children. Our Long Love’s Day -- a title taken from Andrew Marvell’s most famed poem, “To His Coy Mistress” -- marries together the protagonist’s desire to write about strong women in the Middle Ages with her eventual life among some colorful Mississippi characters -- many of whom have engaging musical talents. Guider brings the whole mosaic together with a deft sense of storytelling.

Amazon Reviewer on Amazon wrote:

This is a very moving wonderful perspective on life, love, family values and food values too!

The part of this I liked most was about attempts to stop divorce breaking up family; destroying everyone’s lives, especially our children's.

I know this well as lived through it myself.

Despite begging my then wife and our children’s mother, she moved out of our house leaving my two young teenage sons with me. After six months she hired a divorce lawyer who of course immediately told her to change all this because of child custody financial benefits!

In addition my ex, because of an account overseas in my name and hers, put me under a federal law suite (I chose not to prove it was under her name too because if she ended up in jail as well as me our children would have no parents).

Amazon Reviewer on Amazon wrote:

Everyone in this expansive family saga misbehaves, most also misconstrue the motives of others, and a few willfully misrepresent themselves—with sometimes drastic results. Deftly constructed and set in several locales over the last decade, the story revolves around a professor of medieval literature named Deirdre Durrell, whose seemingly ideal marriage falls apart in the first chapter. Angry and disoriented, she spends a decade trying to keep her personal and professional life on track. No longer young but not ready to be “old,” she has to navigate particularly difficult terrain: it’s an engrossing journey, with new loves, rekindled friendships and serious challenges along the way. This book resonates with real and relatable feelings. I was left with memories to enjoy for a long time! Would be great for a book club discussion; I highly recommend Our Long Love's Day!

CJ Foster’s A Seaside Story brings a compelling tale of love, loss, and the decisions that shape our future…

Love or money? Sometimes it’s not so simple.

Kate Toscano’s life is upended when her sister is killed in a car accident. This jet-setting writer for a trendy Las Vegas magazine is now the guardian of her five-year-old, autistic nephew, Jimmy, and is forced to move back home. Kate’s mother is skeptical about bringing a young, special needs child into her well-structured and organized home in Avalon Bay, but what other choice does Kate have?

As Kate struggles to begin her life anew, she runs into John Neal, her old high school flame. Their parting fourteen years prior was bittersweet when Kate left home to get her degree in journalism and follow her dreams. Old feelings are rekindled, but not all flames that burn are meant to stay lit, so when she learns their timing is off, yet again, she knows it’s time to make a decision: Choose security, or take a bold chance on an uncertain future.

If only it were so easy.

The source of her current vexation was readily apparent from the clue of only one pronoun.  “Just look at what he’s gone and done now!” she snapped as Kate reached the open door and, brushing past her, stepped inside.

She suppressed a smile at the sight of all her mother’s shoes and slippers placed toe-to-heel in a colorful serpentine across the carpet.  Just over her shoulder, she heard Lydia mutter that she had absolutely no idea what had gotten into him to make such a mess of her footwear.  That the young perpetrator was nowhere in sight filled Kate with more concern than her mother’s assessment that it would probably take at least a month of Sundays to restore order to her closet.  “Jimmy?” she gently called out.  “Jimmy, honey, where are you?”

A giggle from behind the wicker clothes hamper rewarded Kate’s patience.  Grape jam from his morning’s toast still creased the corners of his mouth as he burst out of his hiding place like a miniature cannonball heading for the hallway.  Kate intercepted him and held him in her arms as he struggled to get free.  The dark blond hair she had so meticulously combed after breakfast was already unruly and one of his shoes, she noticed, was missing.  “Parade!” he squealed, pointing to his pint-sized contribution to the colorful line-up as he broke free from his aunt and returned to the shoes.  “Parade!”

“It’s a beautiful parade,” Kate praised him. “But we need to put all of these back in Nana’s closet now, okay?”

“Parade!” Jimmy shouted again, this time louder.

From the corner of her eye, Kate could see her mother folding her arms and shaking her head.  Truth be told, she could also read exactly what was running through Lydia’s mind; specifically, the same script she’d been playing over and over ever since Jimmy’s condition had first been diagnosed.  It was Cassy’s deadbeat ex—and not a twist of fate—whom Lydia would steadfastly blame throughout all eternity for providing the genes that made her first grandchild defective.

“What is?” sputtered James. He was feeling light-headed as the drug made itself known once more.

Excerpt:

He was making for the door. At first, Shamus thought it was Father Malone. But why would the priest be running down the aisle towards the exit?

Shamus called after him, “Malone? Malone, it's me, Shamus. What are you doing father?” The man stopped briefly before entering the narthex. He was tall and heavyset, unlike Malone.

Shamus shouted. “Hey, you! Stop right there. Whatever you're doing. Stop!” But the man was gone before he had finished speaking. Shamus gave chase, but by the time he got into the narthex, the main doors were wide open, and the man was long gone. Shamus ran outside into the wind and rain. But the only thing he saw was two ravens leaving their perches in an old oak tree, at the far end of the pathway. They seemed to be heading north, right into the heart of the storm.

Disheartened, Shamus went back inside and searched the building for any sign of Malone. But he was nowhere to be seen. However, what he found sent shivers down his spine.

The stone altar, which was not to be touched, had been broken in half, its religious paraphernalia cast to the floor and scattered about. On the inside of the broken altar was an empty cavity, large enough to fit a book or at least part of one. The church was nearly 300 years old, so whoever placed “whatever” inside the alter had done so a long time ago.

Daniel woke to Tim’s pleading.
“Daniel are you awake? I keep hearing footsteps in the hallway.”
Daniel glanced at the bed-side clock. “It’s 3:00. Go back to sleep.”
“No, seriously, go check it out.”
“Why me?”
“Wait, listen.”
Daniel got up, walked to the door and put his ear against the wood. What he heard sent chills down his spine. Slow, deliberate footsteps coming from the end of the hallway. Too slow to be an actual person. Too deliberate to be the gait of someone out for a late stroll.
“Holy shit, dude.”
“What the fuck is it? Go check.”
“Why me, you coward?”
“You brought us here. It was your idea. You need to go check it out.”
“Why don’t we just go back to sleep? The steps obviously aren’t meant to do us any harm.”
“How do we know that?”
“Because they haven’t tried to get into our room yet.”
“Yet? Maybe you can accept yet.

Daniel put a finger up towards his frightened friend. Slowly he turned the knob and eased the door open. Tim pulled the covers over his head. Daniel stepped into the hall.

Can we reverse the aging process by thoughts and actions?

Very impressive novel, never mind first novel! David tells a well-rounded story and makes his characters real and compelling. I like the shorter chapters as it kept me wanting to keep turning the pages and see what happened next. Add in two major surprises and David took me for quite a ride. Looking forward to what comes next!!

Where is Gabriel Clay?

The search is on for missing twelve-year-old, Gabriel Clay. Few know Gabriel has a secret. Dangers are built-in with his secret. Seasoned detectives, Ben Schwartz and Al Di Natale have joined the rest of Boston in what many call a fool’s errand. The Boston area the boy and his grandmother live in is plagued with drugs and violence. However, the school he attends, George Washington Carver Charter School, offers a first-rate education and an outstanding basketball program.

Wounded Army captain, Ty Douglass, a graduate himself, returns from Afghanistan and joins the hunt. Douglass connects with old friends, Solomon Greer and Charles O’Toole, aka Tool. They share a tragedy from their youth; the unsolved murder of a friend. Empty Doorways has many secrets. Gabriel Clay has his, City Councilor Marty Doyle has his own, and Douglass wonders if Greer and Tool, whose illegal business is becoming more treacherous, know more about their friend’s death than they are admitting. In order to solve this case, the two detectives must risk their lives to uncover the secrets.

Otherwise, there will be more empty doorways unfilled because loved ones are never coming home.

His blue police light flashing on the dash, Di Natale pushed his Mustang up to 80. Ahead was the exit for Dorchester Bay. Di Natale had forgotten his LED flashlight. In a pinch, he’d use the little light on his smart phone to make the arrest. He wished he had his Army night vision goggles. He felt prepared, though. His mission was to confirm if the tip about the shipment was real. Then he’d call in help.

But it was risky and not sanctioned by police procedures. He should have informed his superiors before he left.  If a professional killer was overseeing the delivery, Di Natale could get himself killed and the killer gets away. Would he be doing this on his own, if he was still with his wife Donna and son Chris? Maybe not. Without his family, which he was losing with the divorce, he had less to lose. He drove onto the road to the beach and yacht club. He put his police light back into the glove box.

Di Natale had on his ballistic vest, with pockets for four full magazines and his cell phone. Clipped to his vest shoulder strap was a walkie talkie on a police frequency. On his patrolman’s belt rested his holstered Glock 9mm, a set of cuffs, and a Spyderco knife in a scabbard. He wore hiking boots with dark wool socks, black jeans, a black sweatshirt under the vest, a dark blue nylon rain jacket, with green neon letters, P-O-L-I-C-E on the back, and a blue Boston PD baseball cap. He slowed the Mustang to look for a spot near the coordinates Hernandez gave him. Close enough, he  parked, the beach and the ocean in front. He smelled salt in the wind. He got a call.

“I’m on my way, Mr. Citizen Soldier,” said Schwartz. He was pissed. “We should call in SWAT and alert Boston PD.”

“Right, except won’t we look like the tail end of a baboon when all we got to show for this tip is sand in everyone’s shoes? Besides, if we make this arrest, we might get promotions.”

“Unless they’re posthumous,” said Schwartz.

Where do the lines blur between justice and sacrifice?

Run by the beautiful and charismatic woman known only as Bow, Themis is an organisation created with the sole purpose of doling out justice—justice that picks up where the law fails. When fifteen-year-old Liberty begins questioning the very essence of what she’d been taught all her life, those who have nurtured her are faced with the decision to either continue to give her the protection she has been allowed or seal her fate within its walls.

No matter their decision, each follower is weighed down by the consequences of their decisions as they establish where their true loyalty lies. With the list of those missing growing, the police continue to be frustrated as they attempt to uncover what’s really going on.

As Pippa and Alfie begin to unravel the web of lies and deceit that cover Themis’ trail, they endanger many lives, including their own and those closest to them. As their tips run cold and the body count increases, the police are drawn into a cat-and-mouse game with an underground vigilante and her dedicated followers, with a taste for blood and an absolute sense of justice.

One young woman holds the key, but will she turn the locks of Themis?

Whilst this book is as far away from my comfort zone as you can possibly get, I LOVED it!! Quite some time ago, I read this author's first book, Valor Diamond. That was good - but this is a belter! I cannot believe how mature her writing has become. She's really grown as an author. And let me tell you, she has a sick mind!! So, Themis. What's it all about? Well, without giving too much away, it's an organisation headed up by the fearsome Bow; a woman you definitely don't want to mess with or get on the wrong side of. With her team of followers, Bow is hell bent on bringing her own kind of justice to certain people who have wronged her throughout her life. Yes she is a nasty piece of work, but by the end of the book I felt real sympathy towards her and completely 'got' her. The book is gory, and really difficult to read in places. Be warned, it contains graphic descriptions of physical child abuse and an incident of animal cruelty, so if you find these subjects hard to deal with you might want to steer clear! Me on the other hand, am desperate for a sequel because the ending is sooo ripe for a follow up. Brilliant stuff.

This novel is a page turner if ever I’ve read one! After only reading the first few sentences I found myself already enthralled in the somewhat twisted and intriguing plot, and with the quick paced story-telling that the author achieves, it is one that could easily be unravelled in one sitting. With dark themes and disturbing imagery throughout, this novel manages to encapsulate the feeling of “not-wanting-to-look-but-can’t-look-away” within the reader (in the best way). The author’s use of various perspectives in each chapter of the novel allows the reader further insight to all of her characters, and I was surprised when I found that I actually felt for, and could understand the ‘villain’ of the piece: Bow, whose actions throughout are very difficult to justify. Themis is a captivating read that will have you constantly wondering how this is going to pan out, along with shuddering, and will leave you wanting more. I highly recommend, provided that you’re not too squeamish!

Gail stormed into the house, out the front and slammed the door. I opened my mouth to say…I don’t know, something, when the door flew open.

"For the record," Gail announced loudly as she marched back into the ring, "I didn't know he was married! It's not my fault his wife was so busy breeding she didn't even notice his wandering gaze. He lied to me just as much as he lied to her, so I don't see why you're so pissed at me, Hope. I didn't do anything to you.”

"Ladies," I pleaded with a panicked grin. "Let's go back to our pleasant non-male hating conversation. Please? Hope? Your truck?"

"Shut up!" they shouted in unison.

Hope strode across her patio to stand face to face with Gail. Picture a steel cage match minus the screaming drunks and you'll come close to what I witnessed. I was hoping for a handshake and goodwill. Not today.

"So, tell me, homewrecker. Did you have to pay for your abortion, or did it come out of his wife's purse?"

Gail shook her head, a savage grin on her face. "You're pathetic. No wonder your husband cheats on you."

"Get! Out!" Hope screamed and snatched Dempsey's iced tea glass. I didn't know if she really would have thrown it at Gail's head, but fortunately, Gail didn't wait around to find out. She ducked back into the house and a moment later we heard the front door slam again as she exited out to the front yard.

“So, when do we leave to get my grill?” Dempsey asked. Both Hope and I turned and stared at him.

I received an ARC copy of Brian Fagan's "Dempsey's Grill", and as with all books, I wondered what I was getting. I finished Chapter One and knew Fagan's book was a winner. He provided a full range of emotions. I loved some characters, wanted to strangle one, and had one or two that bounced between love and hate. The relationships between the characters were genuine, and by the time I reached the end, I had fond feelings for all of them, even the one I wanted to strangle. Fagan's writing is smooth, fluid, and took me from event to event, making me feel like I was part of the story. It was a quick, thoroughly enjoyable read, and I recommend it with no reservations.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book and I'm glad I did. It's been a while since I read a story that left me with a smile on my face at the end.

Dempsey's Grill tells the story of Gibson, a teacher who is fired and dumped by his girlfriend (one of the most insufferable characters you'll ever meet on a book page) and has no choice, at the age of twenty-nine, but to move back to his home town and in with his parents. There he meets up with childhood friend, Dempsey, who has a crazy idea about opening up a grill that sells the best burgers in town. Joining in on this venture is Gibson's first love, Gail; an old neighbor who he last saw when they were fifteen, and someone who brings out the best in him. As they help Dempsey achieve his dream, hijinks ensue, friendships are tested, Gibson learns about his own family and self, and what he truly needs to be happy.

Bryan J. Fagan writes in such a fun, conversational tone that you'll feel like your hearing this story from your best friend. I definitely recommend this book for those looking for a feel-good story that teaches you a little something about growing up when you're already supposed to be grown, and the relationships that help shape you.

I was gifted a copy of this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were quirky but believable and it was fun to see them grow as the story evolved. I appreciate a good belly laugh and this book delivered many. I love reading first novels because they usually unearth a wonderful story that has just been waiting to be hatched. Fagan delivers...

on Amazon:

Dempsey’s Grill is a quirky, delayed maturity, coming of age story. Gibson and his best friend, Dempsey, are on the cusp of turning 30, the age they believe is their last chance to get their acts together and perform as fully functioning adults. Their lives are going nowhere fast. Neither of them has a real job or relationship, and the time is now or never. Their decision to start a burger joint plunges them in the deep end of the occupational pool, and their efforts to figure out what the heck they’re doing provide an amusing romp. Adorable, relatable characters make the reader root for them to succeed, and the crazy plot twists keep you guessing. The satisfying ending ties up all the story threads. No cliff-hangers, this is a complete stand-alone.

on Amazon:

Dempsey' s Grill is a quick witted, fun and emotional ride that you will not want to end! The characters are loveable and real, always providing a giggle or a gasp. A wonderfully told, heartwarming story of the joys and perils of youthful ambition. I highly recommend treating yourself to this well written, very enjoyable read by Bryan Fagan.

Pick up Dempsey's Grill and loose yourself in this delightful book.

on Amazon:

While this is not the type of book I typically read, I thoroughly enjoyed it. From the very beginning, I felt as though the author was telling me the story himself. Fagan created a delightful group of characters, from likeable to deplorable and yet somehow managed to make me like them all by the end. Watching the characters grow and mature through their antics and challenges was both funny and heartwarming. I recommend this book for anybody who wants a quick, light, enjoyable read.

Why did life have to be so difficult at times?

Zoe never imagined she would find herself having to choose between two men—or should she say angels. As exciting as that sounds, the need to make a decision is tearing her apart. Does she choose the irresistible one who ignites her body with his passionate kisses, or the wild, untamed one?

Orion found his fated mate the second he saw her in the reflecting pool. He knows that Zoe wants him—but, he isn’t the only one that she wants. His nemesis, Mercury, is her co-guardian and is vying for her attention. Mercury is a rebel—wild and untamed. As co-guardian to Zoe, he feels the need to protect the sexy human woman he has been assigned to. The trouble is he wants more, but he isn’t the only one.

Zoe wants both men, but not all angels will share. Torn between the two angels, she must choose only one. Who will capture her heart—and will the other accept her decision as final?

Excerpt:

Zoe placed her hand on his arm with a smile. She felt the hidden strength of tight muscles beneath his grey and white striped shirt. “Walking is fine. It’s a nice night.”

“Yes, it is,” Orion agreed, leading them across the street and in through the double doors of the standalone coffee shop. After heading to the counter, they retrieved their drinks and settled for a table in the corner by a window.

“This is really nice,” Zoe said, placing her drink on the round wooden table. “Oh, thank you,” she added, dropping down onto the seat Orion swept out for her. Zoe glanced outside briefly, admiring the night sky before returning her attention to Orion.

They started the conversation with a bit of background history, sharing how long they’d been in the area, and other small talk when Orion interjected: “It was fortunate we met, specifically since you said you were on a date with a gentleman caller.”

Zoe smirked. “Oh, you mean the guy I was with. Yeah.”

“I take it things didn’t go well,” Orion said. They looked at each other in the brief silence. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to pry.”

“Oh no. That’s okay. It didn’t.” Zoe paused for a moment, contemplating if she should say what was on her mind. She decided to be bold and speak up. “I know this is going to sound like a pick up line, but I have to know. What’s a handsome man like you doing single, or are you, really?”
