You are invited to take a journey. A journey that is sometimes enlightening , sometimes morbid, sometimes light, sometimes dark, sometimes based in fiction and sometimes all too real.

These stories will upset you, captivate you, make you laugh and cry and may even effect emotions in you that you never knew existed, however, as different as they all are they are seemingly all connected in our hearts and souls.

They possess a deeper theme that brings a frightening reality to the heart of every reader.

Excerpt:

Mexican border, winter, 2016

Nasir Shekau passes over the Mexican border south of Yuma. He isn’t sure why he’s alive. Whether it was a result of a few bad shots from experienced military shooters, or just pure luck. Maybe the two aimed just a bit north or south of the target because they couldn’t bring themselves to end the life of such a brave warrior. The answer is something he’ll never know but inside he hopes it’s the latter. He will not make his way back to Afghanistan. He knows he’ll be tracked down there and possibly given up by his own people.

Lima, Peru. That’s where his dreams lead him. Settle down in a small village just outside the city, overlooking the Pacific. Some say the Pacific has no memory, that it forgives and forgets.

Nasir Shekau is banking on that parable.

He continues his path south. Once he’s over the border, he is free of any American stronghold. The sun peaks out from behind a few fluffy early morning Mexican clouds and he holds his face to the sky to feel the warm rays. They give him a feeling he hasn’t felt in a long time. A feeling like he’s just woken after a long slumber. An invigorating, rejuvenating, euphoric feeling.

It’s the feeling of freedom.

Mr. Boiani has a pension for writing about families and the inner workings that twist and pull until they snap. In the beginning he ties infidelity into a kind of instant Karma that zaps the wholes street. From there we have shorter, detailed snap shots, instead of videos, of more family drama, heightened by wicked intentions, and sometimes monsters.
What can be and should be and what is are the distinctions that are author points out, sometimes in a subtle way, other times it’s with a hammer, but either way it comes as a last page surprise that the reader didn’t see coming.
For short, dark, family stories that steer us outside the boundaries of the law, sometimes morality and other times drift into fantasy this is the book for you.

This collection of short stories explores all the darker emotions: loss, grief, anxiety, and anger.

Each story had a brilliant scope of its own world, and I loved how deep each story really was. The events reflect on real issues that make the collection all the more enrapturing. Very thorough story-telling with interesting messages in each.

I will definitely be searching out more works by this author.

In “Darker Musings,” the second collection of short stories the author does an extraordinary job creating a life like atmosphere for each story leaving you with a circle of questions in your mind. Throughout this book you will feel heart ache, sadness, anger, nervousness, happiness and relief. I read this collection a few days ago and I’m still thinking about each and every story. I would like to thank this gifted author , David Boiani for writing a second collection . Will there be a third? I highly recommend this book of short stories and if you haven’t read his first collection “Dark Musings,” I highly recommend that also.

The Possession

I did not know you,
I did not let you in,
You had no right to strip my soul from within

I could not hear you, see you, or give you a touch,
But you took me in haste, I know this much

I tried to fight you, kick and scream;
You still took over,
Rushing into me with your evil scheme

I tried to breathe, but you were choking me
Why can't I see you?
What the hell could this be?

The physical toll excruciating,
Slowly turning into the monster you were creating.
I could not grasp onto you,
Do you have a name?
God help me I am going insane

You took everything I once was and knew
You took a bite and had a good, hard chew.
I slowly figured you out and gave this possession a name
You are called anxiety, depression, and pain

Is it Enough

What if this is it?
Is it enough?

I loved
I taught
I touched

You used me

Even when my heart was far from you, You used me.

I don’t need accolades
You used me to touch a life

That is enough

A small pebble can break the surface of the ocean

While this book was written by a women, and I suspect is largely for women, I have no doubt many men will be rewarded for reading it as well. Further, age shouldn’t be a limiter. Today’s youngsters (and oldsters) are being subjected to what they might believe to be unimaginable trials. Without the kind of hope expressed in this book, the wrong choice might be seen as the only choice.

Surely, this is a book written from a spiritual perspective by someone who has risen from deep anguish. "The Beauty of Grace - Writings of a Broken Life Healed by Grace" serves up short, but direct, messages of inspiration to seek The True Healer...the real choice.

This old guy enjoyed reading this book and I feel stronger because of it.

What if real life scenarios were far more horrific than fantasy? What if you could visit the dark, unsettling mind of one man and experience the disturbing stories that originate there? These stories are unconnected, but they all include a similar trait: Fear. They are all based on aspects of life that are haunting yet very real. Experiencing these stories will induce a terror that will stay with you long after the final page is turned...

Excerpt:

How does a usually analytical, sane person handle this? It was just a dream, but it was so real, so vivid. Add in the fact that my instincts told me Frederick Stone was a creep from the beginning, and I knew I had to explore this further.

The following day, I had a day off from the school. Actually, I had no classes for the remainder of the week. Mr. Stone left in his pickup at 8 a.m. His work schedule was very hectic, depending on the rate of messy crimes, I guess. Sometimes he would be gone all day, sometimes only an hour. He could go a week with no work or work every day. His hectic schedule made what I had to do very tricky and risky.

“Dark Musings” is a riveting collection of short stories joined by a common theme: a desire to understand the eternal question of providence, the existence of God, life after death, possibility of time travel, mysterious coincidences, and other issues that have been on every person’s mind at least once in their lives. Should we believe our prophetic dreams or discount them as vivid imagination only? How do we know if some higher power is behind a certain fateful event or it’s pure coincidence? Should we trust our logic or our hearts when it comes to the most important decisions in our lives? These and many more ideas are developed and shown through the eyes of different characters: a father hoping to reverse the course of events to save his daughter from an accident; a family of a patient in a coma, deciding his fate without knowing that he is aware of everything happening around him; a woman, deciding to believe her intuition to save a little girl – all these stories will make you ponder on such issues even after you close the book. Definitely a worthy read.

From the first story, The Neighbor, to the last, Incubus, I enjoyed every page of this book of short stories. While I liked them all, I’d have to say my favorites were The Neighbor, Room 723, Aaron (now THAT one was truly scary!), and Motherhood. A few stories had a touch of the supernatural, while others were very much grounded in reality—often an ugly reality, but a reality nonetheless.

I especially liked the Afterword the author did after each story. He either shared what triggered the idea for that particular story or what he was trying to accomplish with it, or he provided the reader with food for thought—like how do we really know the people we come in contact with every day. I highly recommend this collection to anyone who enjoys short stories with a bit of chill to them.

Crisp writing, straight to the point, nails it. I loved the way the stories were put together. The author's narratives and skill with the written word were on every page. Definitely, a great book if you're travelling and want to read the different stories periodically, although the stories are so good you might be like me and binge from beginning to end.

I really enjoyed this collection of short stories, bordering on horror and suspense. The stories were imaginative and fresh and I can only wonder where the author got his ideas from.

I wish the book had been a little longer overall. Guess I enjoyed it a little too much.

Marbles

Tomorrow the sun will rise, much as it did on August 25, 1993. It was a "Steel Blue Sky" as I recall. My Son, Michel would spend our last day together. Little did I realize it then. I certainly would have altered the course of events. We had breakfast that morning at "The Mid Valley Diner" (No longer exists), Michel claimed they made the best omelets. From there we traveled to South Scranton. We were preparing for a cellar entrance way. Excavating by hand. It was there he gave me the last things that would ever pass between our hands. 3 marbles. (I still have them) As we dug, the first of which was light blue. He tossed it to me; I missed his catch, but picked it up and placed it in my pocket. The second one he dug up (a bit darker in color, but also blue) and threw my way, I caught. And placed it in my pocket. And the third of which was much smaller than the other two and a much deeper blue, I caught also. And placed in my pocket.

I remember the day as if it were a video playing over and over again in my mind. And every August 25th I will relive every moment as it plays out. But the marbles will always be a significant part. You see at the end of the day after losing my Son, being devastated and exhausted, in the wee hours of the morning, still in shock, I suppose…. I recall emptying my pockets, and finding those now oh so special marbles. Realizing what was in my hand, they now represent a significant part of him and I. The first marble, the one I missed, represents the part of his life I missed, when I wasn't paying attention and failed him as a Father.  The second marble, darker in color. The one I caught, is the part of him I never lost sight of. And continue to hold onto. And then there's the third and last of the marbles, small, dark blue. It represents, what’s left of me without him. And although there is such a great and precious piece of my life missing; and regardless of the many tears I've shed, on so many August 25th's, I recognize, that the sky will be "Steel Blue" again. I have many reasons to laugh and smile. I have the memories that only God and Michel could have given me. And my faith is as strong as it has ever been. Encouraging me to encourage others. To do my best. To leave a "Respectable mark" on this earth. If for no other reason, than to honor my ‘Michel’.  And tomorrow, the marbles will be in my pocket. They are the most valuable of my material possessions. They are "Priceless" in any sense. So if you happen to see me in your travels on that day, ask me if "I have all my Marbles". And I'll show that I do indeed.

Till we meet again, my boy, I love you with all my heart, deep to my very soul.

Your Father
