Spanning the last ten years, Elizabeth Guider's unflinching but empathetic novel about finding yourself after divorce is a modern-day anatomy of love...

"We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give."

Dr. Ashton Mather Cole and his wife, Dr. Deidre Durrell Cole, are two college professors in a small Ohio town with a seemingly perfect marriage. But when Ashton's love affair with one of his students comes to light, everyone is left rattled, aggrieved, or bent on revenge.

Over the course of ten years, they and those around them strive--sometimes painfully, sometimes comically--to right themselves. New relationships don't come without their own false starts and sorrowful stops. Until...

Fans of Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love" and Meg Wolitzer's "The Wife" will devour this "insightful" and "heartfelt" Women's Fiction novel in one sitting.

"Spoiler! I absolutely loved this book. Their lives lured me in and I was there with them - in every twist of their journey." -Wendy Oberman, Novelist and Playwright

"The author has a knack for getting you to embrace her characters, however fallible and shortsighted, and believe in them." - Suzy Arthur, Author

More than these particulars, Jennifer did not feel it incumbent upon her to elaborate. In pleading her case to her parent, she had been vague about Dr. Cole's age, which she only knew because she had googled him early on during that poetry seminar she had signed up for. In truth, she had been intrigued by the word metaphysical, and needed just three more credits to graduate. She had not a clue who John Donne was. From the outset, though, she had admired how pleasantly the professor had called upon students, and no matter how off-base or banal their comments, he would find some nugget in the dross to burnish. Whenever she was asked to expound on an assignment, he seemed at pains to pull something arresting out of her mumbled remarks.

“If I understand you rightly—Miss, Miss Hazelton is it?—you are suggesting that Marvell's tone is more ironic than urgent when he makes his plea to the beloved. Would that be a fair assessment of how you read the stanzas?” And, yes, it would be henceforth how she read them, glancing around to note that her fellow students were impressed (except for her friend Kimberly, who knew her all too well).

Up to then, Jennifer had relied, heavily and successfully, on her pretty face but, thanks mainly to that class, it occurred to her that a functioning brain could be amusing as well. That explained her initial attraction to the relationship, and why she was so passionate about it; Ashton was passionate too but in a more basic sense. He was surrounded, if not smothered, by brainy people, starting with his wife. He craved Jennifer's body.

Bravo to Elizabeth Guider, whose deeply absorbing novel tracks the transformation of a family impacted by the father’s decision to leave after falling into a passionate but ill-fated love affair. Painted in realistic and very sensitive tones, the novel delves into the mind of the spurned wife, Dierdre, who climbs out of her intense feelings of insecurity and failure to discover new career paths and adventuresome romances. All the while she must deal with the sometimes-secret troubles of her gifted twin children. Our Long Love’s Day -- a title taken from Andrew Marvell’s most famed poem, “To His Coy Mistress” -- marries together the protagonist’s desire to write about strong women in the Middle Ages with her eventual life among some colorful Mississippi characters -- many of whom have engaging musical talents. Guider brings the whole mosaic together with a deft sense of storytelling.

Amazon Reviewer on Amazon wrote:

This is a very moving wonderful perspective on life, love, family values and food values too!

The part of this I liked most was about attempts to stop divorce breaking up family; destroying everyone’s lives, especially our children's.

I know this well as lived through it myself.

Despite begging my then wife and our children’s mother, she moved out of our house leaving my two young teenage sons with me. After six months she hired a divorce lawyer who of course immediately told her to change all this because of child custody financial benefits!

In addition my ex, because of an account overseas in my name and hers, put me under a federal law suite (I chose not to prove it was under her name too because if she ended up in jail as well as me our children would have no parents).

Amazon Reviewer on Amazon wrote:

Everyone in this expansive family saga misbehaves, most also misconstrue the motives of others, and a few willfully misrepresent themselves—with sometimes drastic results. Deftly constructed and set in several locales over the last decade, the story revolves around a professor of medieval literature named Deirdre Durrell, whose seemingly ideal marriage falls apart in the first chapter. Angry and disoriented, she spends a decade trying to keep her personal and professional life on track. No longer young but not ready to be “old,” she has to navigate particularly difficult terrain: it’s an engrossing journey, with new loves, rekindled friendships and serious challenges along the way. This book resonates with real and relatable feelings. I was left with memories to enjoy for a long time! Would be great for a book club discussion; I highly recommend Our Long Love's Day!

When Alexander Sullivan returned to his hometown of Cedar Falls, Louisiana after a seven-year absence, he had no idea his heart would still react to her. Julia Whitmore was his closest friend when they were children, but things were different, and she was now off-limits to him. Still, it is the forbidden fruit that is often the sweetest and most desired, but a taste will cost them dearly.

After a brief love affair, Alexander’s obligations to his family tear him away from Julia, leaving her broken beyond repair and her reputation in ruins. With time against her, she must resort to scandal and deceit to secure a husband before it’s too late.

Is Eric Dalton as ignorant as Julia believes, or is he hiding his own dark secrets and motives?

Instantly, Julia’s face burned red with embarrassment. Slowly, she lifted her eyes from the ground and met his sapphire blue gaze.

Her breaths quickened, her heart fluttered, and her knees threatened to crumble under the weight of his stare.

All of her self-control came cascading down at the sight of his wide, dimpled smile. Oh, how she missed that smile.

Tears began to sting the inner corners of her eyes. She tried to fight them back but failed. The warm liquid dripped down her cheeks, and onto her lips as Alexander’s steps brought him closer to her.

His heart was in an uproar. It hammered against the wall of his chest with wild anticipation to have his arms around her.

He saw no one else in that moment.

No one else mattered.

Alexander took longer more vigorous steps to close the distance that would finally bring him face to face with Julia.

Upon reaching her, he wrapped his arms around her, pulled her close to his chest and kissed the top of her head before lifting her to the sky.

“You cannot possibly know how much I’ve missed you,” he confessed in a velvet whisper as he brought her back down, and into his arms again. The feel of her so close brought life and blood back into his limbs, which until this moment felt numb and useless. He took a deep breath as his cheek rested against her golden curls and welcomed the jasmine scent that filled him and awakened his soul.  He could not believe the gorgeous woman before him was the same frail creature he left behind. She had filled out in all the right places and had become even more beautiful than he remembered.

“You are absolutely breathtaking,” he said as his forehead touched hers gently.

Julia blushed and cleared her throat in an attempt to silence her rapidly increasing pulse.  He stole her words, her very breath and her heart all in a moment’s time. She wanted to forget the painful past without him, the hole in her heart that he carved with his seven-year silence. But she promised herself she would never forgive him.

As a former Quinling, Ben's life should have been plain sailing.  However, bad choices, coupled with naivety, caused him to lose everything he had worked for and start his life from scratch.

This is the third book in the series and it relies heavily on knowledge from book one, and some from book two.

Excerpt:

Weakened legs carried me across the site, over mounds and through deep tracks left by diggers, until finally, the bridge came into view.  Then I saw the Oak tree and finally, through the mist, I saw Maggie, leaning on the handrail, looking into the water.  I hesitated.  She had not seen me, so there was still time to change my mind.  I looked behind me for an escape route, but figures appeared from the mist, moving onto the bridge.  Maggie turned as I approached.

"Hi," she said, but my lack of reply and the expression on my face stopped her from giving me the customary hug.

More figures appeared behind Maggie.  It seemed that the whole site wanted to witness the event.  Maggie glanced around, a puzzled look on her face.  Then there was utter silence; everything was still.  It was at that moment, that a man, far braver than I, stepped forward and slowly dropped down onto one knee, holding out a small open box.  I opened my mouth to repeat at least one of the carefully planned lines I had devised, but no sound came out.  It was a stalemate.  My speech was paralyzed and nobody else wanted to talk until they had heard me ask the question.

I've enjoyed reading the sequel and I think young adults will love it. They'll love it because the lessons the Quinling learned are lessons all of us could benefit from. . . All life is connected. You'll fall in love with all the species Jane (a Quinling) meets and learns many valuable lessons from. I would categorize this book as `fantasy'. I love fantasy!

There’s a big commotion in town, and a young boy discovers in amazement what it’s all about. A big dog with a bucket stuck on its face is loose in town, and nobody can catch him. "Stay back, son," a woman called from the crowd.
Jimmy didn't pay any attention. I'm 10-years-old, he thought to himself. I can outrun any alley monster.
When the two men and Jimmy got within about 15 feet of the monster, it seemed to be aware of them for the first time. It snapped its head toward them and stood still with its legs spread apart, like it was going to jump. It made a scary hissing noise.
The skinny man backed up until he ran into the brick wall. His face turned white and he was trembling.
Jimmy squeezed his handlebars tightly and slowly turned the wheel to the side, so he could make a quick getaway.
Then the older man made a laughing sound and dropped down on one knee. "Come here, boy," he said. Then he whistled a little bit. "Come on. I'll help you."
The crowd had gotten big by now, and lots of people had pushed almost as far down the alley, as the two men and Jimmy.
"What is it?" a man yelled. "Do we need a gun?"

"No, no. No gun," the older man called out. "It's a big 'ol dog with a bucket stuck on its head."

This is a delightful book for younger readers. Jimmy, the main character, is full of spirit and Bucky, the dog, is every boy's dream come true. The vocabulary is age-appropriate and there is a nice, almost old-fashioned sense of place in the little town. The book builds some solid suspense over the question of whether or not Jimmy and Bucky will find each other. The author also includes some common sense advice about children dealing with stray dogs. The story is well-written, includes some humorous illustrations and all in all is a fun little book. Highly recommended.

“This is going to be just like old times, being back at Eggshell,” said Oliver. “Remember kindergarten here? Those were the days, huh?”

Oliver gazed into space and smiled as his thoughts drifted back to their kindergarten days. He pictured the big room that smelled like glue and crayons, with toys and games everywhere. He remembered a tiny Tucker, wearing a cape and hat, chasing a baby Chelsea chick around the room with his magician’s wand.

A pint-sized April Mae, with a thick braid longer than she was tall, was at a table with a toy crystal ball, handing out horoscopes.

Oliver pictured himself back on the beanbag chair reading his favorite Quantum Physics book. He had plunked the huge book down with a thud and stood on it. “Here’s a good joke for you. Where does bad light go?”

April Mae, Tucker and Chelsea had gathered closer to listen.

Oliver stood taller. “To a prism!”

That next morning, I awoke to the sound of a gasp. At first, I thought it was an echo of a dream. A figment of my maddening imagination. But when my eyes fluttered open and I saw Kai appraising the inside of my tent with a confused look, I realized it was neither of those things. The sound had come from him.
I pushed into a seated position and scanned the walls of the tents walls, my jaw going slack. What the….
All over the tent walls were the words, I am the darkness and the darkness is me. I numbly looked down to the pen that I’d used to write in my journal with. And apparently, all over the tent walls when I’d been asleep. I’d been… sleep writing?
Well, this was a new development.
“Is this what you were up all night doing?” he asked.
“No, I…” I traced the words with my finger, in awe. This black magic thing was even consuming me when I was asleep. This had to have meant that I’d graduated to the next level

if that was even a thing. But if so, then what was next? I almost didn’t want to know. “Yeah,” I breathed. “I guess so. But I don’t remember it.”
“About an hour after you turned your lantern off last night, I heard a scratching noise against your tent walls.”
I raised an eyebrow at him. “And you didn’t think to come check on me? See what I was doing? If a bear was trying to get in and eat me?”
He gave me a weak smile. I could tell the sleep-writing episode had unnerved him a little, though he would never tell me so. I understood, though. To someone who wasn’t as immersed in the black magic as I was, it would look creepy as hell. I then had a flashback of the first time I’d seen the scribblings in my journal. Yeah. Creepy as hell. “To be honest, Lil, no… I didn’t. I knew you were okay. Besides, I don’t think anything would willingly try and get in here with you.” His eyes flickered to the growing ring of dead around my tent as if to drive his point home.
All I could do was shrug and flash him a smile. I guess he was right.
