A large sum of money. A skilled Private Investigator. A missing book. How could any of these elements ruin one's life? Quite easily, when the work follows you home, threatens to destroy all you know and love, and promises to unleash forces beyond humanity's comprehension upon the world. James Riley is a man with secrets; some seemingly harmless, but when the doctors start forcing the memories to unchain, reality and the truth have only one conclusion... One shattered night.

He was making for the door. At first, Shamus thought it was Father Malone. But why would the priest be running down the aisle towards the exit?

Shamus called after him, “Malone? Malone, it's me, Shamus. What are you doing father?” The man stopped briefly before entering the narthex. He was tall and heavyset, unlike Malone.

Shamus shouted. “Hey, you! Stop right there. Whatever you're doing. Stop!” But the man was gone before he had finished speaking. Shamus gave chase, but by the time he got into the narthex, the main doors were wide open, and the man was long gone. Shamus ran outside into the wind and rain. But the only thing he saw was two ravens leaving their perches in an old oak tree, at the far end of the pathway. They seemed to be heading north, right into the heart of the storm.

Disheartened, Shamus went back inside and searched the building for any sign of Malone. But he was nowhere to be seen. However, what he found sent shivers down his spine.

The stone altar, which was not to be touched, had been broken in half, its religious paraphernalia cast to the floor and scattered about. On the inside of the broken altar was an empty cavity, large enough to fit a book or at least part of one. The church was nearly 300 years old, so whoever placed “whatever” inside the alter had done so a long time ago.
