Justice K. Chambers' debut work, Shattered Living, touches on the fragility and darkness of the human state when suffering with mental illness. In this collection of fifty-two poems, she takes the reader on an eye-opening journey of inner turmoil and loss of self, then brings them to a place of acceptance, where they can learn to cope and find their light in the shadows again.

The Possession
I did not know you,
I did not let you in,
You had no right to strip my soul from within
I could not hear you, see you, or give you a touch,
But you took me in haste, I know this much
I tried to fight you, kick and scream;
You still took over,
Rushing into me with your evil scheme
I tried to breathe, but you were choking me
Why can't I see you?
What the hell could this be?
The physical toll excruciating,
Slowly turning into the monster you were creating.
I could not grasp onto you,
Do you have a name?
God help me I am going insane
You took everything I once was and knew
You took a bite and had a good, hard chew.
I slowly figured you out and gave this possession a name
You are called anxiety, depression, and pain
