Jovie is a very brave girl, she is not afraid of anything! There are a few things that make her uneasy, like math tests and making new friends. As she struggles through life help comes from the most unlikely of places, the monster that lives under her bed!
Jovie peaked around the corner, but no one else was alone. She saw another group of people she knew but they all talked and laughed together and there just did not seem to be enough room in the conversation for her.
Jovie leaned against the wall again and looked up. Hanging from the rafters was a large, black bat. Jovie flinched as the thing dropped to the ground, flipped in midair, and landed with a gentle thump with a flap of its enormous fleshy wings.
Jovie whipped her head around, looking to see if anyone saw the thing, but the rest of the students were in their own world and didn’t seem to notice.
The bat opened its mouth and breathed heavy. Holding its wings to each side, it sauntered forward, black eyes locked onto Jovie.
“Are you here to help me make friends?” Jovie asked.
The bat froze, looking confused.
“Uh…uh,” it sputtered, then said, “Joan told me you might need a little scaring before we dive into it.”READ MORE
Jovie rolled her eyes. “I’ve already made friends with two monsters, so let’s get on with it.”
The bat seemed to consider if she was lying or not, but with a shrug of its hairy, thick shoulders, it extended a claw-like hand. “Preston the Bat, at your service.”COLLAPSE

I teach grade 6 and while the intended audience is likely a bit younger this is the perfect book to read aloud to children in middle school. The story is engaging and kids of all ages will learn the important messages regarding emotions and anxiety contained in its pages. As a middle school teacher I see kids struggle to understand and deal with their emotions. During the past year my students have a particularly rough time as the adults in their lives might also be struggling. This would be a great classroom book and a wonderful book to read as a family.

Not only do I love the cover art, but this story is delightful. I love the way it teaches children about navigating emotions and going through hard things in life. This story is so engaging and fun that children won't even realize that they are covering these tough topics along the way., they will only know they are having fun. Love that there are books like this that teach hard lessons to little hearts in a healthy and positive way. I would recommend this book to all of my mom friends and teachers. BRAVO!
A great book to help children and adults learn to deal with their feelings. Would highly recommend.
